Bigger Kingdoms for Whiskers

You may have read our recent article about semi-community cat living. We didn’t stop there and have recently added two more options.

Most cats settle beautifully into our semi-community vibe. They find a high perch, establish their safe base, observe everything with mild superiority, and then quietly decide how much of the world deserves their attention that day.

But not every cat wants the same kind of holiday.

Over the years, we’ve learned that some cats don’t need separation — they simply appreciate more room.

Double Cat Condo – Dinner for One

For them, we now offer Double Cat Condos (Single Occupancy). That means two connected condos for one cat. More space to stretch, more levels to claim, and more options — without removing them from the calm semi-community environment.

It’s not dramatic. It’s just a little extra personal real estate.

The idea actually came from one of our customers. We liked it, tried it, and quickly realised it made perfect sense. Some cats simply enjoy the semi-community area for a while and then return to their condo like it’s their favourite couch. A little extra leg room just makes that preference more comfortable.

For practical reasons, this option isn’t available during peak times like long weekends or Christmas. Our region already has too few catteries, and during those busy periods we still want to give as many families as possible the chance to let their cats enjoy a proper holiday while they travel. A little fairness goes a long way.

New: The Cat House

And then there are the very sensitive ones: Older cats, Immune-suppressed cats, Kittens still figuring out the world or simply cats who are much happier not seeing or smelling other cats at all.

For them, we created the Cat House.

The Cat House is significantly larger, with multiple levels, proper hiding spaces, and a cosy cat cove. It’s located in a separate room within the main house, away from the main cattery building.

That distance allows for a quieter setting and more frequent human interaction without the constant presence of other cats.

To be transparent: because of its location inside our home, it isn’t part of public tours. We do provide photos so you can see exactly what it looks like. There is also no attached community area. Cats staying in The Cat House usually remain there for their visit – and for the type of cats this is designed for, that’s often exactly what helps them feel safe.

It’s a very specific solution for a small group of cats who prefer their own personal kingdom with multiple levels, proper hiding spots, and plenty to explore, while staying entirely on their own terms.

So… Have We Finally Cracked the Cat Code?

With Isolation Condos, Single and Double Condos, the Family Room, and now The Cat House, we’ve built quite a range of options.

But even with all of that, we don’t believe our cattery is the right solution for every cat … and that’s okay. People have been trying to figure out cats since ancient Egypt, and they’re still a mystery.

For cats who need something more like an apartment with a large outdoor enclosure – almost a small cattery of their own — we often recommend Waikanae Boutique Cattery. They provide large rooms with private outdoor access and a genuinely excellent environment for cats who thrive in that kind of setup.

And some cats are simply happiest at home. In those cases, a pet sitter or home sitter may be the better fit. We’ve written more about that in our article on Pet Sitting vs Pet Boarding.

One thing we can do, though, is see your cat in a new environment. Sometimes we notice things that are harder to spot at home, like a cat constantly searching for deeper hiding spots or avoiding certain stimuli. If your cat stays with us and we believe another option – here or elsewhere – would genuinely suit them better, we’ll tell you.

Because this isn’t about filling rooms.

It’s about finding the environment where your cat feels relaxed, curious, and quietly confident … even if they still insist they don’t need anyone at all.
